Why can't Atticus "put two and two together" like he usually can?

Heck Tate is trying to convince Atticus that Jem could not have killed Bob Ewell. He wants Atticus to look at the facts and understand that it was Boo Radley who killed Bob Ewell in defense of the children. Atticus is usually adept at putting "two and two together."
