why are the children in the Radleys garden at night

In Chapter Six, the children are in the Radley yard trying to peek in the windows of the house. This was the episode in which Jem loses his pants.

"We thought it was better to go under the high wire fence at the rear of the Radley lot, we stood less chance of being seen. The fence enclosed a large garden and a narrow wooden outhouse."
