Atticus is the lawyer and, many argue, the protagonist in To Kill a Mockingbird.

With regards to Scout using his first name, I think that Atticus sought to empower his children. He used this familiarity of name to teach them a sense of responsibility to him and each other. Also, this might have originally helped with the pain over the death of their mother.
