To kill a Mockingbird celebrates the strength and heroism of standing up for what is right despite overwhelming opposition. Atticus knows he will probably lose the case because of the entrenched racism in Maycomb. Atticus knows both he and his family have a lot to lose by taking the case. Atticus still takes the case because it is the right thing to do.
