Societal expectations for Scout was to grow up to be a good Southern girl who knows her manners, does not speak her mind, and one who follows conventions of white society. Scout refuses to conform, instead choosing to follow the teachings of her father Atticus: to follow what is right. Aunt Alexandra and her Missionary Women's Club would have Scout wear "pretty" dresses and conform to the same mindless bigotry that they do.

Scouts inability to conform to the prejudiced mindsets of Maycomb was mainly due to the way she was brought up. We can infer that having Calpurnia as a motherly figure aids her resilient personality. In addition, her aunt's useless attempts at implementing sexist ideas only drove her curious mind further away from the norms during a time of not only racial, but sexual prejudice.
