Walter comes from a farming family that has no money. Times are hard and Walter simply does not have a quarter for lunch. Miss. Caroline offers to lend a quarter to Walter but Walter refuses. The Cunningham family is poor but fiercely proud. Walter feels humiliated because his teacher does not understand this.
