Miss Gates is careful to explain to her students that Hitler is an evil man, and that his treatment of the Jews is unacceptable. Later, she overhears her teacher stating that the blacks in Maycomb were “getting above themselves.” Scout is able to link the parallel between the situation faced at home and the Nuremberg Laws....... somehow Miss Gates has missed the entire point.

The irony in the Ladies Social Group's conversation about the African Mruna's is that it shows them as hypocritical. Their discrimination against the African Americans in town makes a mockery of their pity and compassion for the Mrunas.
