What is one reason Atticus has for defending Tom Robinson and why doesnt Atticus think he will win the case?

The main reason Atticus defends Tom is that it is the right thing to do. He knows the man is innocent, he also knows that the prejudice running rampant in Maycomb will result in a conviction. None-the-less, he believes Tom has a right to the best counsel and defense available.
