Atticus actually treats Mayella with respect. Mayella interprets this respect as mockery. This says a lot about Mayella's life. She has never been treated with respect, especially from a male grown up. Mayella lashes out at Atticus because she can not fathom anybody, especially a man speaking to her the way Atticus does. Mayella's ignorance is both telling and heartbreaking.
