To Kill a Mockingbird

What is Mayella's attitude towards Atticus ?

In the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird', Mayella accused Tom Robinson of rape. While she was on the witness stand what was her attitude to Atticus and why was she having an attitude with him? Atticus is Tom's lawyer.

Atticus actually treats Mayella with respect. Mayella interprets this respect as mockery. This says a lot about Mayella's life. She has never been treated with respect, especially from a male grown up. Mayella lashes out at Atticus because she can not fathom anybody, especially a man speaking to her the way Atticus does. Mayella's ignorance is both telling and heartbreaking.
