Jem cries for everything good and right had been shot down by the jury. Atticus lowers his head. Then, in the commotion, he catches up with Tom Robinson and attempts to assure him they have a "better than good chance" that they can win on appeal. When the court empties of white people Atticus picks up his hat and briefcase, he sombrely walks out the back door.
