To Kill a Mockingbird

What is Atticus trying to get Scout to understand? and why? How does this message apply to you?

quote that goes with the question: “First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You really never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--”“Sir?”“--until you climb into his skin and walk around it.” (39)

This passage exemplifies the special bond between Atticus and his daughter, Scout. Throughout the novel, Scout learns more from her father than anyone else. Atticus teaches Scout important things about life and the world that she does acquire from school. Scout listens to Atticus very carefully. has great respect for him, and deeply values his advice. With this quote, Scout is learning the valuable lesson of empathy: the ability to see and feel things from the point of view of different people. I don't know how this message applies to you. You will need to consider this.
