what happened on the way home from the pageant?

They are almost home, near the dark shadow of the tree by the Radleys' house, and are trying to walk faster. It sounds like the person behind them is wearing thick cotton pants. It is Bob Ewell and he attacks the children. Boo Radley is also there and he kills Bob Ewell and saves Jem and Scout.
