The book is about a community named Maycomb in which a man named Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Even though his white lawyer, Atticus Finch, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Tom did nothing to Mayella, he is convicted of the rape, and ultimately dies trying to escape from prison.
