What does scout mean when he says,"By the time we reached our front steps Walter had forgotten he is a cunningham"?

First, Scout is a girl. What "she" means is that Walter immediately felt welcome and at home. Normally, the Cunninghams wouldn't have socialized with the Finches. None-the-less, after initially feeling a bit out of place, Walter fits right in.
