In this section, Lee shows us Atticus’ love for his children. When Scout questions him, he immediately asks her if the word was used in reference to her personally. When he finds out that the name calling referred to him, he teaches her what the word actually means. Through this, we see Atticus' desire for his children to look at things from outsidde of the bax and realize that everyone is equal.
