Maycomb’s black church is an old building, called First Purchase because it was bought with the first earnings of freed slaves. The church has no money for hymnals, and few of the parishioners can read, so they sing by echoing the words that Zeebo. The church is one room and very run-down.

Here is a quote,

"First Purchase was unceiled and unpainted within. Along its walls unlighted kerosene lamps hung on brass brackets;pine benches served as pews. Behind the rough oak pulpit a faded silk banner proclaimed GOD IS LOVE...."
