What does Atticus tell Scout about why the jury took so long to convict Tom?

Atticus is actually talking to Jem about the length of time it took the jury to make a decision. Atticus said that normally, the jury would only have taken a few minutes to bring back a guilty verdict. He saw the two hours the jury spent deliberating as promising for the future.
