In Chapter One, we learn that Scout's ancestor, Simon Finch, settled near Maycomb in Alabama. Simon Finch was a slave-owner and farmer, he lost his fortune durng the Civil War.Atticus Finch went to law school, his brother Jack, went to medical school. Aunt Alexandra lived at Finch's Landing, the family home built by Simon Finch.Maycomb was a small, tired town. In the midst of the Depression, people didn't move quickly and had nowhere to go. No one had any money.... even people with an education had to accept good as payment because no one had any money..... thus, neither did they.
