To Kill a Mockingbird

What do we learn (both directly and indirectly) about the Ewell family during Tom Robinson’s trial? How does this make the reader feel about Mayella?

In this section, we learn that Mr. Ewell is physically abusive to his daughter, and that her testimony is based upon fear of that abuse. It is difficult not to sympathize with a neglected, poverty stricken, young woman, who lives in fear of her own father.
