The children assume that Miss. Caroline is familiar with their community and their background. They find it amusing and unnerving when Ms. Caroline discusses talking animals. These are farm kids who raise and eat their animals. She also does not understand the social dynamic of her children. The children are surprised that their teacher is so clueless about her class.
