Literature, at least good literature, creates an intimate bond with the reader. Between two covers, or buried under the glow of your Kindle, are the thoughts of a writer being passes on to you. To Kill a Mockingbird has stayed with me since I read it 22 years ago. In particular the character of Atticus has left an indelible mark on my life; really it has. Atticus is a character that stands up for what is right, even in the face of scorn and certain defeat. He leads by example both with his children and the greater community. He is gentle, humble and idealistic in a world that does not reward such traits. Even today, when faced with a moral dilemma, I still ask myself; "What would Atticus do?"
