Each of the major and minor themes in "To Kill a Mockingbird" carry with them meaning. Racism, justice in the face of overwhelming odds, empathy and love are all points to consider. I think that, in the end, Harper Lee wants us to come away thinking about themes like empathy and social justice in our own lives as well as in the lives of her memorable characters.
