 Scout explains that Finch family history in Maycomb County, traces back to the Civil War. Aunt Alexandra believes that The Finch family has an honorable name to keep up in the community. 

White people in the community feel they are a superior to blacks. They will even back a known liar and drunk over the word of an honest black man.
