Boo Radley kills Bob Ewell in order to protect Scout and Jem. The truth about Boo Radley would have harmed Boo himself. Boo could not handle the attention and it was better for all involved that Bob "fell on his knife". For once Atticus could see the benefit in bending the truth. Atticus was correct that this small lie would cause less harm for everyone, especially Boo whois a mockingbird-figure, rather than telling the truth.
