Were you surprised by the verdict?

When I first read this, many years ago, I was not surprised by the verdict more than disappointed in it. I knew the racism in the South during this period was too ingrained into many in the white population. They had not forgotten the scars of the Civil War and there would be no compassion for Negros for a very long time.
