Why is it so important to Jem to risk his safety to retrieve his pants from the Radleys’ fence in the middle of the night?

I think Jem does not want to disappoint his father Atticus by losing his pants. Even though Atticus isn't as poor as most of the people in Maycomb, money for clothes was hard to come by.
