To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter 27

Atticus and Aunt Alexandria let Jem take Scout to the play because they are tired. What does this show about their thought process concerning the events that have taken place over the past year?

Before the children leave, Aunt Alexandra has a feeling that something is going wrong, and Scout notices a strange look pass over her face. Alexandra blames it on "someone walking over her grave". Admittedly, the two adults are exhausted from the trials faced over the last year. None-the-less, their willingness to allow the children to walk to the pageant unsupervised by an adult shows they believe Maycomb to be safe. Though Aunt Alexandra is hesitant, something she probably would not have been a year ago.
