In one of the extracts it says that black people were often forces to do 'dirty jobs'; what does this mean and why were they the ones forced to do such jobs

Often, undesirable jobs were the only occupations left available. Thus, blacks were forced to take these jobs when nothing else was available. Note, many employers during this period discriminated against African Americans.
