To Kill A Mockingbird

Scout learns that her father was appointed to defend Tom Robinson. She observes, “The court appointed Atticus to defend him. Atticus aimed to defend him. That’s what they didn’t like about it. It was confusing.” What does the reader understand why the townspeople are upset that Scout doesn’t? Use the strongest evidence from the novel in your answer.

Scout doesn't understand the entrenched racism that exists in Maycomb. She does not understand her father has lost the trial even before it has started. Scout doesn't yet see the sexual nature of the crime and that the truth is irrelevant to bigotry and hate.
