Mayella is described as a lonely girl without friends. At first sight, she is described as fragile looking, but that quickly changes as she sits down and faces the spectators in the courtroom. According to Scout, "....she seemed somehow fragile-looking, but when she sat facing us in the witness chair she became what she was, a thick-bodied girl accustomed to strenuous labor." Mayella was extremely proud of her "red geraniums".
