Atticus hopes that Scout's cussing is just a phase that will wear ot soon. At one point he says to his brother Jack, "Don't pay any attention to her, Jack. She's trying you out. Cal says she's been cussing fluently for a week, now."pg 78 Perhaps Atticus understands that it is Scout's way of dealing with the recent stresses in her life.
