This was a small country school where generally poor white children attended. They come from largely agricultural backgrounds. Miss. Caroline finds a great disparity between teaching in the city and teaching in this rural setting. These children do not have an appreciation for stories about talking animals who live in houses. Their sensibilities are rooted in the often unforgiving setting of farm animals meant for work and food.
