To Kill a Mockingbird

There’s a recurring theme in this story of pretending to be someone or something that you’re not. Find at least one example and explain how this idea is demonstrated. Why did the character act in this way?

I'm a tad bit confused with the question that my teacher assigned me. Could anyone help?

An example is Boo Radely, who the town thinks that he is some kind of a monster. But he actually was a shy, thoughtful man who saved Scout and Jem from Mr.Ewell's attack. He just had to stay indoors because of how he had gotten in trouble with the police when he was a boy, and Boo's dad didn't allow him to go outside. Even though Boo stabbed his dad, he still didn't go outside. That's why people thought of him as a monster.
