• Scout and Jem have no adult supervision. Atticus is too tired, and Aunt Alexandra doesn't wish to attend the pageant.

• Cecil Jacobs purposely scared Scout and Jem on their way to the pageant.... on the way home, they thought he was teasing them again.

• Scout and Jem are the last to leave. Thus, they are completely alone on their walk home.

• It is completely dark, Scout and Jem can't see a thing.
