In Chapter 25, the symbolism of the mockingbird expands to include all songbirds. Songbirds come to symbolize the defenseless. Mr. Underwood, an honorable man, argues that Tom's murder was a sin.... that he should never have been tried.... solidifying Tom's place as the novel's mockingbird.
