Atticus is pointing out that simply because ingrained racism will probably lose them the trial, does not mean they can't do the right thing and fight for justice anyway. Mrs. Dubose also felt she was fighting a losing battle with her morphine addiction. She still tried to kick her habit before she died because it was the right thing to do.
