In the first sentence, Scout points out that Jem had his arm broken when he was thirteen years old. We do not find out how Jem broke his arm until the end of the book. This ties directly with the first sentence of the book. I like this framing technique in stories. It gives the story's meaning a clear sense of meaning and nostalgia within the narrative.
