In chapter 12, what is "lining"? Why is it used at the church?

Lining is a method of repetition. Most of the people in Calpurnia's congregation are illiterate, thus, hymns are sung (or read) to the congregation, who then sing the same lines back. They also did not have enough hymn books for everyone.
