To Kill a Mockingbird

Miss Maudie says, “There are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father’s one of them” (288). What does she mean? What evidence from the novel supports this statement?

Ms. Maudie means that nobody wants the job of defending an innocent black man in a racist town. Atticus risks harassment to him and his family. Atticus is doing the right and just thing even though the odds are against him. White people will not stand for a black man's word over white people even though the white people are Ewells. Atticus is willing to risk his reputation because he believes that the court is the last refuge for the innocent and the truth.
