To Kill a Mockingbird

Look at Atticus’ quote on pg. 266, starting with, “I cant conceive…” What does this quote reinforce about Atticus’ character? How might this character trait make him feel guilty about what happened?

Atticus says that, "I can't conceive of a man who'd try to kill children." Atticus, with all his experience in law, is shocked at what Bob Ewell tried to do to his kids. Atticus had previously downplayed the danger of Bob Ewell. Atticus felt bad because he Inadvertently exposed his kids to danger.
