Mr. Raymond isn't really an alcoholic. He has a black wife and some mixed half-white half-black children. He likes to appear as a drunk so people will leave him alone. He understands the hypocrisy and bigotry that exists in Maycomb. He is counterculture in many respects. He refuses to accept the racially based status-quo. He has his own sense of morality and morals that are mostly at odds with white America in the South.
