Jem points out that "mixed child" are "real sad" because they do not belong anywhere. He explains that "colored folks won't have 'em because they're half white; white folks won't have 'em 'cause they're colored, so they're just in-betweens, don't belong anywhere." A sense of belonging and identity are very important in life. They anchor us and give us purpose. Consider how identity affects you.
