I think the main element is that the reader knows the truth about what happened. Tom is innocent and Bob Ewell is somehow responsible for what happened to his own daughter. The suspense surrounds how Atticus will prove this. Mayella and Bob Ewell are unreliable witnesses. They act on emotion that is often irrational and one-dimensional. Atticus knows this and must find a way to make the truth obvious to even the most racist jury member.
