We see Aunt Alexandra increasingly worried about her brother. Aunt Alexandra begins to show more affinity to Ms. Maudie rather than her church ladies. The trial has taken a lot out of him and it seems to be unending. Miss Maudie thinks that the town has paid Atticus a high tribute by trusting him to do right and uphold justice. These people are the small handful who know that blacks should be given justice, and who have "background."
