How well does Mr Gilmer prove Tom's guilt in the eyes of the reader and in the eyes of the jury? Can you suggest why these might be different?

In the eyes of the reader, Gilmer proves nothing outside of the fact that Tom is innocent.... we know better. In the eyes of the jury, Mr. Glimer successfully appeals to their attitudes about African Americans in that time. A black man discovered holding a white woman was beyond their understanding.... it simply wasn't done. Tom's race earmed him a guilty verdict..... Gilmer never had to win the jury over.
