Atticus believed that despite the ignorance and racism of the town, Tom had a fighting chance. Tom didn't. Although crushed, Atticus did not lose faith in the justice system that he cherishes. I think, however, he did lose some faith in people. His friends and neighbours failed to step up and do the right thing in the face of terrible injustice.
