How does Jem regard Scout’s attack on Walter? Why does Jem invite Walter to “dinner”?

Jem regards the attack as unprovoked. He is a little embarrassed of his sister. He feels sorry for Walter and invites him for supper. I think Jem knows that Walter has little to eat at home.
