In Chapter One Jem and Scout, especially Scout, feel that Calpurnia is the bane of their existence. They see her as domineering and taking their freedom away. In actuality Calpunia serves as a surrogate mother to Scout and Jem who cares for them like they are her own kids. Scout and Jem come to see this later in the novel.
