Jem is the first of the children to figure out that the gifts so strategically placed in the knothole are specifically planted there for them. Initially, he believes they've come across a secret stash, just like Scout and Dill believe. It isn't until Nathan fills in the knothole that Jem realizes the gifts came from Boo, and that Nathan had stopped the gift giving. This process of maturation is evident when we see Jem standing on the porch in tears...... he's just realized that Boo has been ostracized and locked away all over again.
